To Celebrate or To Not Celebrate...

That is the question of the week. With Halloween approaching we have been thinking of how we will celebrate this holiday once we have kids.  Brenden and I are not big fans of Halloween and would  be completely happy if we never celebrated. Neither of us enjoy dressing up as something or someone we are not, probably because we are not the most creative people in the world.  I have also found that Halloween has become a holiday where adults (sometimes even kids) can dress in VERY risque outfits and think that it is appropriate since it is a costume. I will stop there on that, as I could go on and on about how I feel about that!  Halloween learns toward an "evil" holiday, one where many things happen I would rather not think about or associate with.  This is probably my biggest reason for not liking the holiday, as it has origins in dark and evil things.

Since Brenden and I have moved towards a "real" foods diet we also find it almost annoying how the isles at stores fill up with candy and other junk food for Halloween.  I was excited to see that Chipotle is offering a healthy alternative to Halloween junk food.  They have teamed up with Jamie Oliver and his mission to make America healthier. If you go to Chipotle after 6 pm on Halloween dressed as "a horrifying processed food product" they will give you a burrito, bowl, salad, or an order of tacos filled with freshly cooked, naturally raised ingredients for only $2! They are helping Jamie Oliver raise $1 million for his Food Revolution.  Now this is the kind of Halloween party I could have fun at!  We do not have a Chipotle where we live, but if we did I would dress up as a can of Campbell's Cream of Chicken Soup.  Have you looked at the ingredients on cream of anything soups? WOW!  Check out Chipotle's Halloween deal here. The website has a great video on the "The Horrors of Processed Foods" tab, it shows how our food manufacturers make chicken nuggets. And people wonder why we have health issues and obesity problems!

We actually did go to a Halloween party this year, which is the first one we have been to since we've been married (almost 9 years now!).  My friend who hosted the party decided to have one because she had over 100 deer steaks in her freezer she wanted to use.  So they decided to have a costume party and serve chicken fried deer steaks with all the fixings.  They had a camp fire going so we sat around the fire to eat. We stayed several hours and had a great time.  B decided to go as a pilot (this was a tough one for him to pull off since he is a pilot!) and I went as a black cat.

I would love to hear how others feel about Halloween. Do you celebrate? Do you like to dress up for costume parties?  If you do not celebrate Halloween how do your kids feel about not participating?  Also I would love to know if any of you are going to visit Chipotle on Halloween dressed as a processed food!

  1. This is interesting because Craig and I were talking about this the other night. I don't want our kids to go trick or treating more because of a safety issue than anything. I just don't believe it teaches positive behaviors to ask for candy from complete strangers and there are just too many crazy people out there that could put something in the candy. Even though I'm childless right now, I'm leaning towards the fall festivals that the schools and the churches partcipate in. I also just honestly don't care for the holiday. I'm not a fan of gory movies or anything that has to do with death, bloody, or seeing things that should remain in the human body.

  3. i love dressing up for halloween. and i love dressing the kids up for halloween. i believe God sees what is in my heart and he knows whether or not i'm doing it for the right reasons.
the kids have a Christian book about halloween that doesn't "diss" halloween but talks about Jesus being the light of the world. so we will read that every year.
