My Place

I'm excited for today's post because it is an easy one! Today's prompt for the blog everyday in May challenge is "A moment in your day (this can be just a photo or both a photo and words)"

The tough part about this challenge? Picking which moment in my day, although I don't really have to many exciting things that happen during the day!

This is where I have been spending a large majority of my days recently.  In my office working on blog things + scrap-booking.  Of course, I have be drinking an iced coffee with my great stainless steel straws!  If you do not have stainless steel straws, go get some right now!

Weekend Wanderings {5.4.13}

Welcome to another addition of Weekend Wanderings!  For all my new readers, Weekend Wanderings is a weekly post that I share articles too good to not share with my lovely readers.  Enjoy!

Blogging, From a Non-Blogger's Perspective::  Love this post written by a non-blogger. If you are not a blogger, you need to read this!

Why I Eat White Rice Instead of Brown::  I think I'm switching back to white rice. I keep reading about the higher levels of arsenic in brown rice so I have not been making brown rice very much recently.

What is the Difference Between Heirloom, Organic, Hybrid, and GMO?:: Simple article discussing the differences, good information.

How to Can Dry Beans::  I want to try this. I usually process and freeze dry beans but I think canning would be easier.  Do you have a pressure canner?

3 Simple Stretches for Better Posture: Takes Less Than 5 Minutes::  I have set reminders on my phone 3 times a day to do these stretches. I am also starting yoga again a few times a week to help with my posture and flexibility.  What do you do for your posture?

Eggs: To Wash Or Not Wash:: Interesting article about washing farms eggs.  Are the eggs you get locally and at the farm washed or not washed? The eggs I purchase locally are washed.

10 Uses for Chia Seeds::  I love adding them to my smoothies. I also would love to try them to make pudding. Do you use chia seeds? If so, how do you use them?

13 Lush Eco Beauty Tips:: I want to try the natural hair lightening idea. I used to get my hair highlighted, but once I started taking chemicals out of our house it also included no more chemical hair treatments.  All those chemicals soaking in to my head is a little scary!

In case you missed it, here is what was on the blog this week:

I posted everyday this week, I think I earned a gold star!!!

What are you doing this weekend? Don't you just love weekends? As long as the weather is nice we are going to the driving range tomorrow to hit a few golf balls.  Probably the last time at Fort Rucker, as our time is coming to an end here and we are beginning to have our "lasts" before moving.

Life Lately via Iphone Pics {April 2013}

It has been awhile since I've done one of these posts, so I figured today was a great day since I have lots of posts in draft mode and none of them ready to publish!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen some of these photos but not all of them.  If you do not follow me on Instagram yet, follow me @amodernhippie and I'll follow you back!

Earlier this month my car drove past 200,000 miles!!! Yikes.  It is a great little car but is definitely showing its age now, but only cosmetically because it still runs like a champ!

I had a garage sale in hopes of getting rid of some of our things before moving. I did not have a great turnout, but I sold most of the big ticket items.

B & I always treat ourselves to a meal out on the weekend. We usually do not splurge and eat dessert, but B wanted ice cream so we stopped to get some (actually I did not get any!)  at a local ice cream shop.

I meet a group of friends every Wednesday for coffee.  I go early sometimes to work on a blog post or read. A couple weeks ago I started reading The Hormone Cure for a review I will be doing on the blog in the next month.  Do not wait for my review to decide if you want to read it, please go purchase a copy & read it!  I highly recommend it and it is VERY important information that each of us (women) need to know, no matter your age.

With our time winding down here in Alabama, I knew I had to go to the beach at least a couple more times before we move.  So, a few weeks ago I went with a friend for the day. We did a little shopping and then enjoyed the rest of the day on the beach.

My view during our beach trip

I snapped this shot on the way home, I will really miss driving on tree lined roads like this when we move back to Kansas.

I found a great deal on a used espresso machine so we decided to buy it!  We have been wanting one for several years but have not wanted to spend the money on one.  We are loving making our own espresso drinks.  I think our coffee maker is a little sad and feels left out, you know if coffee makers actually had feelings!

A friend and I went to Montgomery to go dress shopping for the formal ball at the end of May.  Of course we had to stop and eat lunch somewhere really good. I picked The Tipping Point, a little local place that is really good.  The food was great and the outdoor seating was wonderful.  Although mid way through eating a kids birthday party showed up and they sat next to us.  Sorry parents, it was rather annoying to have your kids running next to our table + blowing bubbles around us like we did not exist.  It is not really a place that kids would enjoy, so we decided it was the moms who picked the place since they have good food and drinks. Anyway, I got the salad trio with pasta salad, coleslaw, and hummus.

So a week after using our new used espresso machine it suddenly stopped working.  After searching the Internet for 30 minutes, I found the solution!

I got my haircut last week and the stylist decided to add some curls/waves to my hair with a flat iron.  I told her they would not hold up in the heat + humidity but we decided to give it a try.  This was less then 30 minutes later and most of the wave is out. Although it was a nice change to my very straight hair! I have not been brave enough to try styling it that way myself, as I'm sure it would end in disaster.

Can I say that I love taking pics in the Target dressing room?!   And no, I did not go in the dressing room just to take pictures  I actually had clothes to try on. Target mirrors are much better then the tiny mirror I have in our house. This is another attempt to try and get a shot of my curly/wavy hair.

So what have you been up to lately?

The month of May I'm doing a blogging challenge with Jenni from Story of My Life. The challenge is to blog everyday of May, so 31 days of blogging!  She gave us some great writing prompts that I'm excited to use.  With this challenge, I will still be doing some of my regular posts including Menu Plan Monday, Fitness Friday, Weekend Wanderings, recipes, and more so there might be more then 1 post a day.

I also start my lunge & push up challenge tomorrow. If you have not read about the challenge I created, check it out here.  If you are joining me, make sure to do those lunges and push ups tomorrow!

Weekend Wanderings 4.14.13

It is a rainy Sunday here in southern AL. The windows are open with a cool breeze blowing & the sound of rain and gentle thunder.  I've enjoyed a relaxing day so far of catching up on blog things. My afternoon will be devoted to reading a little and scrap-booking.  What are you up to today?

Beware of Pedicure Pitfalls:: What great ideas. I do not get pedicures very often, but for special occasions or at the beginning of flip flop season I splurge!  I need to order a pedicure kit so I can start taking my own tools. I've also heard that if you take Tea Tree Oil and add a few drops to the soak tub it can help with any nasty things that might be in there.  Do you take your own tools or polish with you to get a pedicure? If so, have you had any negative reactions in doing so?

Your Apples Are A Year Old::  I should have known this, but I never really thought about how old apples might be by the time we can buy them at stores.  B grew up in WA state around apple orchards, so he does not eat apples very often that I buy.  He always complains they are not crisp enough, which is probably because they have been sitting in cold storage for a year before I have access to buy them!  Do you have apple trees where you live? Do you go pick your own fresh apples?

Monsanto's Dirty Dozen:: If you are still not convinced that Monsanto is evil, check out this article about the things Monsanto has had there hands in throughout their history. If you missed last week's Weekend Wanderings, I had some great articles about Monsanto and GMO's...go check them out if you have not already.

10 Things You Can Recycle Through The Mail::  Some of these things I will start doing. I always struggle throwing batteries and light bulbs away, but I have not found a local place to recycle these items.  How about you, what things do you throw away in the garbage that you should be recycling???

You're Not A Prop {Subtext Series}::  Angie's blog is one of the first blogs I started reading 5-6 years ago.  This article might offend some people out there, but I don't mind as I agree with her 100% and wanted to pass it on to my readers.  Please check it out and leave me a comment on if you agree or disagree. It is a great reminder on why we do things!

The Battle We Didn't Choose::  A touching series of photos through a woman's battle with cancer documented by her husband. Hint: If you click on the top picture it will enlarge it and you can arrow through them in order.  He also has several videos and other things on his site related to his wife's journey.

Are Your Shoes Healthy::  I love my Merrill minimalist shoes. I have not run in them, as I have no current issues running in my normal Brooks running shoe. So why change what isn't broken? At some point I would love to try a short run in minimalist shoes, but I would probably go for one that would be a better transition then the Merrill shoe I currently own.

How To Repair Denim Jeans At Home::  Love this, but I would have no idea how to do this at home. Wonder if there are other places that do this kind of mending job other then NYC?

The Scared is scared:: A very cute video, a must see! I love listening to kids and hearing the stories they create!

Anonymous Comments:: Love this article. I have had so many annoying anonymous comments recently on my post, most of them spam.  So frustrating!

In case you missed it, here is what I had on my blog recently:

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
