Essential Oils 101 {Guest Post}

I'm delighted to have a friend share today about essential oils.  I met here while living here in Alabama and am so glad I know her! We are a part of a "crunchy" group on FB, both want to homestead one day, and we enjoy all things healthy and "crunchy" like!  She is very knowledgeable on the subject of essential oils so who better than her to share with my readers on the subject.  Thanks Rachel for taking the time to teach us!

Have you ever wondered if there was a more natural way to handle common health needs without the long-term damage to your body? There are actually LOTS! However, since this is just one article as a guest post for my dear modern hippie friend’s blog, I’m going to focus on an introduction to one of them, essential oils!

Ok, disclaimer time… The product statements in this article have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. dōTERRA essential wellness products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. (Gotta cover the backside, but in reality, if you feel the same way as I do, the lack of approval may just be the best reason to keep reading!)

Since everyone has a different level of understanding about oils, my intention is to give you the basics. Essential oils are volatile compounds found in nature. Volatile simply means that they evaporate or vaporize when exposed to the air. They are found in the seeds, roots, bark, leaves, flowers, and fruit of the plant. The oil is extracted from the plant material by either steam distillation or cold-pressing methods.

dōTERRA oils can be used 3 different ways; diffused aromatically, applied topically, or in many cases taken internally*. When diffusing, using an ultrasonic diffuser is ideal as it atomizes the oils into smaller particles that can stay in the air for up to 8 or 9 hours.  This is an especially helpful method when trying to affect the lungs, mood, or when trying to use with littles.
A few fun facts…
  • The pores in your feet are the largest in your body, so oils applied topically on your feet absorb faster into your system. Oils applied to your feet will have spread within your blood stream in a matter of seconds, and throughout your body in a few minutes!

  • Your nose is connected via the olfactory nerve to the amygdala portion of the brain, which is where the emotive mood center is. So when you smell a scent. The effect of that scent will reach your brain almost instantly! This can be a good, or not so good thing, but definitely interesting. It does make the aromatic use of oils very effective in helping to manage mood support.  There are studies that have shown that relating a smell to a memory will help burn the memory into the synapse in the brain, and that smelling the same scent will help with memory recollection. Pretty cool huh? There are several oils and blends that are designed with these functions in mind (pun totally intended ;-p) so that they can help when people are upset or stressed, and even help with depression.
  • The science of reflexology (ok, look this one up, it is way cool!) combined with the usage of oils and massage allows profound effects on areas we can’t actually reach, like internal organs. Many people have found it helpful in treating things like hormonal balance, and organ detox.

Why dōTERRA? Because you often get exactly what you pay for!

This company is fairly new on the scene being only a bit over 4 years old. It is a fairly young company, but in those 4 short years it has easily risen to the top of the essential oil community. This is because of the quality standards the company has dubbed Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade or CPTG. This means that every liter goes through multiple tests and is independently tested to ensure that not only is it free from contaminants and 100% extracted oil from the correct plant, but also that it carries the constituents or properties necessary to make it safe for use, and more importantly, effective! This is sadly not a standard practice, and many companies use synthetics and fillers to increase profits, and decrease the costs to the consumer.

While this is definitely nice for your wallet, it may not be as nice when you are trying to avoid those old chemical OTC remedies. Some oils, especially when combined with synthetics can be toxic, and have unfortunate side effects. You may have read of a study showing that Lavender and Melaleuca, AKA Tea Tree Oil were shown to cause breast tissue to develop in adolescent boys. These two oils can be some of the most effective oils for so many needs, but have gotten a bad reputation because of the synthetics that were often unknowingly used in place of the real deal! This is why with anything really it is so important to do research, check out the company, and strive to make the best choices possible.

The world of oils is a vast, exciting, and at times mysterious place full of adventure, and great discoveries! It is really hard to put all of the cool things I have learned in one post, but I would love to answer any questions you may have about what I have written here, or oils in general. Feel free to contact me at freebyhismercy@gmail.com.

Rachel has a Facebook page, check it out here for more tips + facts on essential oils. For more information on doTERRA products, check out Rachel's website.

*The oils that I have been talking about are dōTERRA products, and the recommendations made are based on their quality. Please do not use just any oil internally, especially if it is not labeled for dietary use!

Weekend Wanderings {5.4.13}

Welcome to another addition of Weekend Wanderings!  For all my new readers, Weekend Wanderings is a weekly post that I share articles too good to not share with my lovely readers.  Enjoy!

Blogging, From a Non-Blogger's Perspective::  Love this post written by a non-blogger. If you are not a blogger, you need to read this!

Why I Eat White Rice Instead of Brown::  I think I'm switching back to white rice. I keep reading about the higher levels of arsenic in brown rice so I have not been making brown rice very much recently.

What is the Difference Between Heirloom, Organic, Hybrid, and GMO?:: Simple article discussing the differences, good information.

How to Can Dry Beans::  I want to try this. I usually process and freeze dry beans but I think canning would be easier.  Do you have a pressure canner?

3 Simple Stretches for Better Posture: Takes Less Than 5 Minutes::  I have set reminders on my phone 3 times a day to do these stretches. I am also starting yoga again a few times a week to help with my posture and flexibility.  What do you do for your posture?

Eggs: To Wash Or Not Wash:: Interesting article about washing farms eggs.  Are the eggs you get locally and at the farm washed or not washed? The eggs I purchase locally are washed.

10 Uses for Chia Seeds::  I love adding them to my smoothies. I also would love to try them to make pudding. Do you use chia seeds? If so, how do you use them?

13 Lush Eco Beauty Tips:: I want to try the natural hair lightening idea. I used to get my hair highlighted, but once I started taking chemicals out of our house it also included no more chemical hair treatments.  All those chemicals soaking in to my head is a little scary!

In case you missed it, here is what was on the blog this week:

I posted everyday this week, I think I earned a gold star!!!

What are you doing this weekend? Don't you just love weekends? As long as the weather is nice we are going to the driving range tomorrow to hit a few golf balls.  Probably the last time at Fort Rucker, as our time is coming to an end here and we are beginning to have our "lasts" before moving.

Weekend Wanderings 4.21.13

This past week has been crazy busy! I can tell we are winding down our time here in AL and my "move to do list" keeps growing.

Did you do anything fun this weekend?  I did not do much this weekend, as I went to the beach on Thursday and got a horrible sunburn on my back. For some reason I did not think to put sunscreen on my back, oops!!!  So I have struggled doing things the past few days because my back hurt so bad.

The Squatty Potty::  This is on my list to get once we are settled into our new home.  I have had these on my wish list for awhile and really want one!!!

Intro to Alkaline/Acid Balance & Acid/Alkaline-How to Stay In Balance:: I love her videos and this is great info.  The Arbonne 30 day challenge I did last summer had this focus, how to eat foods that help balance your Alkaline/Acid, as our SAD (Standard American Diets) are very high in acid.  Don't stress about this, just eat a healthy whole foods diet and you will get it balanced in my opinion! Although, I think it would be fun to order some test stripes to see where I'm at for a week or two.  Have you tested your Alkaline/Acid balance?

Pampering Ideas that are Eco-Friendly:: Love these ideas.  Stress is high right now for me since I'm doing all things moving prep and more! How do you pamper yourself? Is it eco-friendly? I love getting pedicures, but it isn't very
eco-friendly!

How to Get a Flat Stomach:: Thought these were great tips since summer is right around the corner! And did you notice what they recommended...how funny I just shared about getting one.

Mercury Amalgam Fillings: What Dr. Oz Did NOT Tell You:: A must read if you have had or will have dental work done!

Make sure to check out the giveaway I'm doing with Melissa from In Her Boots!

Weekend Wanderings 4.14.13

It is a rainy Sunday here in southern AL. The windows are open with a cool breeze blowing & the sound of rain and gentle thunder.  I've enjoyed a relaxing day so far of catching up on blog things. My afternoon will be devoted to reading a little and scrap-booking.  What are you up to today?

Beware of Pedicure Pitfalls:: What great ideas. I do not get pedicures very often, but for special occasions or at the beginning of flip flop season I splurge!  I need to order a pedicure kit so I can start taking my own tools. I've also heard that if you take Tea Tree Oil and add a few drops to the soak tub it can help with any nasty things that might be in there.  Do you take your own tools or polish with you to get a pedicure? If so, have you had any negative reactions in doing so?

Your Apples Are A Year Old::  I should have known this, but I never really thought about how old apples might be by the time we can buy them at stores.  B grew up in WA state around apple orchards, so he does not eat apples very often that I buy.  He always complains they are not crisp enough, which is probably because they have been sitting in cold storage for a year before I have access to buy them!  Do you have apple trees where you live? Do you go pick your own fresh apples?

Monsanto's Dirty Dozen:: If you are still not convinced that Monsanto is evil, check out this article about the things Monsanto has had there hands in throughout their history. If you missed last week's Weekend Wanderings, I had some great articles about Monsanto and GMO's...go check them out if you have not already.

10 Things You Can Recycle Through The Mail::  Some of these things I will start doing. I always struggle throwing batteries and light bulbs away, but I have not found a local place to recycle these items.  How about you, what things do you throw away in the garbage that you should be recycling???

You're Not A Prop {Subtext Series}::  Angie's blog is one of the first blogs I started reading 5-6 years ago.  This article might offend some people out there, but I don't mind as I agree with her 100% and wanted to pass it on to my readers.  Please check it out and leave me a comment on if you agree or disagree. It is a great reminder on why we do things!

The Battle We Didn't Choose::  A touching series of photos through a woman's battle with cancer documented by her husband. Hint: If you click on the top picture it will enlarge it and you can arrow through them in order.  He also has several videos and other things on his site related to his wife's journey.

Are Your Shoes Healthy::  I love my Merrill minimalist shoes. I have not run in them, as I have no current issues running in my normal Brooks running shoe. So why change what isn't broken? At some point I would love to try a short run in minimalist shoes, but I would probably go for one that would be a better transition then the Merrill shoe I currently own.

How To Repair Denim Jeans At Home::  Love this, but I would have no idea how to do this at home. Wonder if there are other places that do this kind of mending job other then NYC?

The Scared is scared:: A very cute video, a must see! I love listening to kids and hearing the stories they create!

Anonymous Comments:: Love this article. I have had so many annoying anonymous comments recently on my post, most of them spam.  So frustrating!

In case you missed it, here is what I had on my blog recently:

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Weekend Wanderings 12.16.12

I have so many wonderful links to share with you since it has been a couple months since I have had a Weekend Wanderings post, but I will keep it to a few since we are all so busy this time of year.  Enjoy browsing through the following links!

Legacy Drawer::  Dave Ramsey is my hero!  Just kidding, but really his Financial Peace University changed our lives.  We have lived on a budget with no credit cards for over four years now and paid off a TON of debt.  I wish we would have taken his class when we first got married.  We still have a ways to go, but I highly recommend this class to anyone.   Anyway, this is a project Dave recommends for everyone, I just need to find time to begin the project.

1000 Memories::  I love Carly's Digitwirl videos.  I thought I would share this one since I have dug all my pictures out that I have not scrap-booked and plan to get them completed by the beginning of February--I'll let you know if I make my goal deadline!  This might not be for everyone, but some of you might love this idea as a way to store all your pictures.  I'm more old-school and like to have a book to flip through. HINT: if you are pressed for time, scroll down in the link and just watch the short video.

3 Steps to Pursuing Your Career:: I always say I will grow up sometime and figure out what I want to do.  Although I already know what I would like to do, I just need to take the steps to get there.

Healthy Food for the Troops::  Great article by a US Marine.  Every time B deploys he always tells me they have plenty of sugar and preservative filled foods. Healthy foods on the other hand are not as readily available.  If you send care packages to soldiers, there are some great ideas in the article.

Purchase with a Purpose::  My goal in buying presents is to go local (and not local as in Wal-Mart) and/or buy things that benefit others for the better.  There are some great items I would love on my wish list!

She & Him::  Looking for new Christmas music?  This is on my list to purchase, thanks to my brother's recommendation!

Is Pinterest Killing Blogs:: Interesting article for bloggers and Pinterest addicts!

Check back tomorrow for a yummy recipe you could take to Christmas or New Years Eve parties!

Weekend Wanderings 9.9.12

Is it really already Sunday? Why do weekends go so fast?  We went to Target on Saturday and I noticed that they had Grandparents Day cards.  Today is Grandparents Day and this is the first year that I don't need to buy a card.  This makes me sad.  If you have grandparents in your life give them a call and tell them you love 'em!

The Healthier Hot Dog--Not! :: Another reason I'm glad I don't eat hot dogs.  Lets add another unnatural ingredient to our food!  I have a gross story about corn dogs I have to tell you about, since I mentioned hot dogs!  One day for school lunch in grade school they served corn dogs.  At this point I still ate hot dogs.  I took a bite of my corn dog, looked down at it and saw green fuzzy stuff all over the hot dog.  I took a bite of a moldy corn dog!  I don't remember what I did after that, probably nothing because I was SOOO shy. Although I'm sure I didn't finish the corn dog and was probably hungry the rest of the day.  But from that day forward I never really liked eating hot dogs or corn dogs!

How to Protect Your Family from the Dangers of Formaldehyde::  Great article with products that contain formaldehyde and ways to help clean the air in your house of this nasty substance. With it being in so many items the majority of houses have it in the air.

3 Killer Recipes to Alkalise Your Body:: This is a great post about foods we should be eating.  The Arbonne 30 day program I did was based on exactly this, balancing your body's blood PH.  The majority of the foods in the SAD (Standard American Diet) are acidic which is a breeding ground for disease.

Newsflash: We are not "just fine"::  Another great post related to how food has a huge impact on our health and bodies.

Say Goodbye to Junk Mail with PaperKarma::  I have been wanting to try this and have not.  Next time I get junk mail I'm downloading the app and giving it a try.  Have you tried it?

Have a wonderful, relaxing Sunday and see you tomorrow for Menu Plan Monday.

Chemical Free Foaming Hand Soap

This week has been a crazy week. I have been listening to the online Real Food Summit presented by Underground Wellness.  Have you been listening and enjoying the Summit?

If you have not signed up for this FREE summit I highly recommend checking it out today! There are three seminars each day from some of the top people in the real food movement. The seminars are only available (for free) during that day, so if you want to check some of them out don't wait around.  The Summit goes through July 16 so you still have a few days to learn about real food.  Tomorrow one of my favorite real food bloggers will be speaking, Kelly The Kitchen Kop. So excited to hear her speak.

Besides getting to listen to these wonderful speakers, there are live Q&A sessions every evening which allows you to ask your questions to the presenters.   I highly recommend you register, I am learning a TON!

Today I want to share with you how I make our chemical free hand soap.  Up until several years ago I used Bath & Body Works hand soaps but as I slowly removed chemicals from our house the hand soap had to go!  I do admit, I love the smells of the Bath & Body Works hand soaps but I just did not want to be washing my hands in chemicals.

Here are a couple articles regarding chemicals in hands soaps (and other products)

Antibacterial Agent No Better Than Soap & Water – and It’s Toxic
EWG's Guide to Triclosan
Dangers of Antibacterial Soap
Scientists Discover That Antimicrobial Wipes and Soaps May Be Making You (and Society) Sick

Environmental Working Group has a Skin Deep Cosmetics Database which rates products on a number scale based on the ingredients that are in products.  Not all products are listed on the website, but you are able to look up individual ingredients to see how they rank.  I aim to only purchase products with a rating of 3 or below.  I encourage you to check out some of the products you have in your house to see how they rank.  Have you used the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database before?

Are you ready to toss out the hand soaps filled with chemicals in your house?  If so, here is an easy recipe to make your own foaming soap.

What you need:
~Container with foaming lid.  Don't you love the mason jar foaming soap container?  I purchased them from Post Road Vintage.  I also got the basic recipe from Post Road Vintage (excluding the optional ingredients listed below)

~Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap (any scent you want, I usually use Eucalyptus or Unscented)
~Young Living Thieves Essential Oil Blend Household Cleaner (or a mix of your own essential oils)

~Filtered Water

Optional Ingredients that you can add:
~Vegetable Glycerin
~Vitamin E Oil

Once you have the ingredients gathered, here is what you do.

1.) Fill soap container with 1 cup water.  Don't worry, my water is not yellow, I just forgot to add water first. You want to add the water first because if you wait to add it at the end it will get super bubbly.
2.)  Add 2 Tablespoons castile soap to the soap container.

3.)  Add a cap full of Young Living Thieves Essential Oil Blend Household Cleaner.   If you do not have any of the Thieves Essential Oil Blend you could use a mixture of essential oils you like.  When using essential oils, start with a few drops and slowly add more.  Some essentials oils can be very strong and you wont need to use many drops.

4.)  Add 1-2 teaspoons vegetable glycerin (optional).  I just started adding this to my soap and love it.  Vegetable glycerin is a great moisturizer for the skin.

5.) Add 1/2 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (optional). Vitamin E oil is another great product for skin care products because it moisturizes and is healing due to the antioxidant properties.

6.) Stir the contents and screw on lid.
In under 5 minutes you can have foaming hand soap for your kitchen and bathrooms that you know is safe for you and your family to use!

Do you make your own hand soap? If so feel free to share your recipe in the comments!

Have you entered my giveaway to win 1 quart of Tropical Traditions Gold Label Coconut Oil yet?  Giveaway ends July 19 so make sure to enter!

I'm linking up with day2day joys for healthy 2day Wednesdays. Yeah I know, I'm a day late!

Weekend Wanderings 7.8.12

Hope you have enjoyed your weekend.  So far we have gone to garage sales, drive in movies with friends, eaten at Cheeburger Cheeburger, and we are heading to the pool later this afternoon.  Oh, and how could I forget, I enjoyed a Starbucks Vanilla Latte!

Here are some links to check out in your free time this weekend.   Enjoy!

Can We Eat to Starve Cancer: Dr. William Li speaks at Ted and is worth the time to watch it.

Here is Dr. William Li's list of Antiangiogenic Foods. (check out video to understand these foods)

What You Can Find While You're Waiting on Friends. Great article!

Lost For Words Card Line.  Beautiful cards for life's tough situations.  I found this site when I was going through one of my miscarriages and decided to bookmark it in case I needed to send a card to someone.  Going through 4 miscarriages and 1 tubal pregnancy I can say that no words will heal the pain and heartache, but getting cards during those times brought me joy.  Those cards will be cherished forever.  Know someone going through a loss? Take a look and order a few!

8 Ways You Can Avoid Chemicals In A Can. This article is a few months old but still has great information and ideas.  Have you heard about BPA?  If not, check it out and try to avoid it.  If I can find a product that is sold in glass instead of a can I spend the extra money to get the glass jar.  Then after I have used the product I can reuse the jar for something else.

Bible Verse Printables.  I need to print some of these for my office!

I'm Sexy and I know It Parody.  You have to watch this if you haven't seen it yet.  Way to go KS boys!

4 Inexpensive Ways to Organize Scarfs.  Mine are a mess right now so I think I need to use one of these ideas!

See ya Monday for Menu Plan Monday.  Have you planned your menu yet? What have you done this weekend?  Next weekend I'm hoping to go to Florida, cant wait!

Weekend Wanderings 6.24.12

Hope you have had a great weekend. This weekend went WAY.TO.FAST! B has his second check ride tomorrow so we are hoping and praying he does well and passes. There is a tropical storm in the Gulf and we are supposed to have rain and storms this week. So we hope to have good weather and calm winds so he doesn't have to fly and do maneuvers in windy weather.

It has been awhile since I did a Weekend Wanderings post and my folder of great things I want to share is growing far to large!

Dangers of the Birth Control Pill. This is a great abbreviated read on some of the issues with birth control pills. I am convinced that if I had not been on birth control I would not be having hormone issues which have unfortunately lead to us not being able to start a family yet.   I know this is a controversial issues, what do you think of the article?

While we are on the topic of babies, or lack of babies check this post out about What You Should (and Shouldn't) Say to Someone who has Lost a Baby.

The Cooking Oil Comparison.  I love this and is hanging on my fridge for reference!

Interesting article on What's Wrong with Farmers Markets  What are your thoughts?  Have you experienced these things at your Farmers Markets?

How Long Does Food Last?

Well that is all for this weekend!  I would love to hear back from you on your thoughts on the above links.

Weekend Wanderings 3.24.12

The weekend is starting out to be wonderful. B is playing golf today with some friends so I enjoyed the morning at a local coffee shop. I don't have to run errands this weekend so I get to enjoy being around the house. Here are a few things I have found that I wanted to share with you.

I love watching Ted Talk videos and now they have some on Netflix so I can enjoy them on the TV.  Do you enjoy watching these?

Brene Brown has a Ted Talk on shame.   If you have an extra 20 minutes check out her first Ted Talk on vulnerability that she refers to in her talk on shame.  I have always struggled with being vulnerable and open with people, so these really spoke to me. It is definitely worth your time to watch.

Modern Alternative Mama has a great post on 10 Items You Shouldn't Buy at the Store.  These are some of the first things we stopped buying as we transitioned to "real food".

Since the weather is definitely warming up these are some great ideas to make your water more interesting to drink.  You should be drinking half your body weight in ounces of water everyday.  That sounds like a lot of water, but once you are used to drinking that much water you will miss it if you go a day not drinking much water.

Seasonal allergies are in full swing. Here in the south the pollen is EVERYWHERE.  The healthy Home Economist has a great article:: Pollen is Not the Problem

Ashley from Lil Blue Boo started The Li'l Journal Project.  What a great idea.  It all started with The Journey.  If you receive one of the journals you will have to let me know!!!

Most people probably do not know this about me, but I LOVE drinking out of mason jars.  Problem is that they do not travel well so I can never take them as my "to go" beverage container.  Well that problem is now solved with these. We have really expensive glasses that we received as a wedding present. If I'm grabbing a glass out of our cabinet I always go for the mason jar over those expensive glasses!  This is definitely on my wish list or maybe someone wants to surprise me with a small gift....just kiddin' (maybe)?!?!

Have a marvelous weekend!  We are headed out of town for a mini vacation next week!  What are you doing to enjoy the weekend?

Random Thoughts Tumbling Around My Brain

I have so many things I have been meaning to blog about that this will be a random post.

I finished boot camp last Friday and on Saturday I ran the Spooky 5k.  It was a tough run with hills and wind. It is rarely windy here and of course it was blowing pretty good they day of the 5K!
Before leaving for the 5K.

After 5K with a Vanilla Latte.  B was a sweetie and came to cheer me on (not sure if he did any cheering!) and had a latte waiting for me at the finish line!

Some of the girls I ran with in the 5K. The third person from the left is my trainer!

I had my followup appointment with the naturopathic doctor last week.  My hormones are definitely not where they should be. In an effort to get them back to normal I'm taking 4 supplements, taken several times throughout the day.  To help me remember I had to download a vitamin reminder app on my phone!  I will take them for the next two months and then have another followup.  I am hoping and praying it works so we can have a baby Merrigan!

I went to my first Zumba class last night and really wished I had a pair of these instead of my running shoes!  These are definitely on my list to find his weekend.  Zumba is really fun and I recommend it to anyone that wants to sweat alot,  burn calories, have fun, and shake those hips!

I wish I was going to the Wise Traditions 2011 Conference. Maybe next year I can make it and meet some bloggy friends!

Well that is all I have for today. Check back tomorrow for a couple of recipes.

Till next time,

To-Do List Exhaustion

Source: etsy.com via Andrea on Pinterest

I live by my to-do lists.  I am even one of those people that if I don't happen to have it on my to-do list but it is something I have completed I jot it down on the list and then cross it off!  I know, you can call me crazy!

Since starting our whole food & natural living journey several years ago my lists have become longer and much more time consuming. Sometimes this leaves me exhausted and wondering why I try do everything I do.  I often times dream of what it would be like not to have a 40+hour/week job and all that I could accomplish. Even though I work in a home office, I still do not get much done outside of my office during work hours.  I may start a load of laundry at lunch, but it is usually still sitting in the washer when I finish up work that evening!

Several weeks ago I talked about my real food journey.   If you haven't already read the post I encourage you to check it out.  Along side my journey of changing our eating habits to more whole foods we have also become more "natural" or "green" in the other areas of our life--hygiene, laundry, cleaning, and the list goes on!

Just like the real food journey we have taken baby steps in our natural living.  These two areas basically go hand in hand--if you are doing one you are probably focusing and working on the other.  Even with the baby steps in this journey it can become overwhelming, especially with my personality! Once I have an idea in my mind I am annoyed with it until it is complete.  This can be exhausting and annoying.

Since I only have a few hours in the evening and my weekends, I usually have a jammed packed to-do list.  The items include both house keeping tasks (laundry and clean toilets) and the baby steps I want to work on for natural living .  Many of the baby steps take planning and preparation, so they usually are on my list for several weeks and possibly months!  There is always so much I want to do, just not enough time to get it done.

You may be wondering what kinds of things keep me up at night and what wish I had more time to do......here are a few things I have on my master "to do" list. This is the list of my thoughts and ideas of things I would someday like to get complete:

Start Composting
This is a great thing to have with a garden.  This is going to take lots of research because I do not know much about the art of composting.  If any of you compost or have any recommendations please share!

Have a "real" garden next year
This year I only planted tomatoes and peppers since I was packing and moving during the time I should have had plants already growing.  I have them planted in pots since we are living on post and they would not mow if I put a garden in the back yard!  Growing them in pots work great, but I would love to have a section of land to actually plant other things like beets, potatoes, onions, lettuce, cucumbers, pumpkins, and the list goes on!  I am so excited for next year because there is a community garden on post which I plan to use. I need to start the planning process of what I will grow and how to grow them.  Again, if you have any gardening tips or suggestions please share.

Perfect my bathroom and kitchen scrubber recipe
I am not 100% satisfied with it and would like it to have a little more scrubbing power!

Get my home business up and running
I have always had the "entrepreneurial mindset"  and dreamed of owning my own business. I discussed some of that here, check it out if you are interested.  Since we can not dump money into an actual storefront I am pursuing my dreams of owning a business by opening an Etsy store. I am in the research & testing phase but hope to have it rolled out in time for Christmas shopping!

Read my big stack of books
I always have a big stack of books in the living room that I want to read.  Unfortunately, I always put off reading to work on other things.  I am trying to read a little ever evening which is helping get my stack of books smaller.  The books in my stack right now include What to Eat by Marion Nestle, Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, Vegetables in Pots by Deborah Schneebell-Morrell, Your Farm in the City by Lisa Taylor, and Friendship for Grownups by Lisa Whelchel.  What books are you reading right now?

Find a local source for milk, meat, and eggs
This one is at the top of my list right now.  I had no idea how lucky I was in Salina to have a wonderful food co-op that focused on food that was local, chemical & hormone free, and grass/pasture fed animals.  I'm struggling finding local farmers or a food co-op to  purchase food.  Any Alabama people have good connections to local farmers or food co-ops?

Canning Tomatoes
I canned tomatoes while I was home a couple weekends ago.  Now that I know what I am doing I plan to start canning as soon as I start getting red tomatoes on my plants!

Find and make a recipe for dish washing soap.
This is about the only cleaning type product I still buy that is commercially made. If you have a good dish washing soap recipe I would love to have it!

I have actually been working on this post for a few days and yesterday I came across a post at Simple Organic discussing this topic!  This post has some great tips on what to avoid so you do not become overwhelmed while trying to live naturally.
