Ramblings & Observations

It is kind of hard to believe, but I have already been in Alabama for 1 month.  It has been a crazy month getting unpacked, settling into a new place, finding things like decent grocery stores, health food stores, coffee shops (haven't found a great one yet),  doctors, hair stylist, and many more things!

One of the things I dislike most about moving is finding new friends. I should be a pro at this since I have moved numerous times in my life, but I find the older I get the tougher it is to find true friends. Being an adult isn't all its cracked up to be!  We went to a BBQ last weekend with some of Brenden's classmates and families.  When I say families, I mean EVERYONE had kids.  This makes finding friends even more difficult, since we do not have kids.  A year ago this would not have phased me, I would have not minded being the only married couple without kids.  But now going to events with lots of families is tough on me, well tough on us.  I hate to admit it, but I held tears back multiple times during the BBQ.  Everyone I talked to  asked the question I guess they feel breaks the ice, "when are you planning to have kids?"  I really haven't figured out a good response for this, so I just maintain composure and say, "maybe someday."  So long story short, finding friends isn't much fun!

On a lighter note, here are some observations this Kansas girl has of Alabama:

1. It is gorgeous here with all the trees, hills, and curvy roads.  Although, sometimes it is frustrating for this Kansas girl!  I wish I could see the sunrise, sunset, and open fields!

2. Alabama is hot and humid with NO wind.  At times this is great but sometimes I just want to feel the wind in my hair.  Brenden and I still laugh that we can put cardboard boxes filled with paper on the curb for recycling and it doesn't blow away!

3.  The traffic signals here are wimpy. They are on wires, (like the temporary signals they put up during road work in KS) not heavy duty poles. But I guess if there is little wind the traffic signals can blow in the slight breeze.

4. The dirt is REALLY RED!  Our grill already is stained from the red dirt. The sidewalks all have a hint of red color, and my linoleum floors do not stay clean from all the dirt!

5.  Everyone speeds, except on post.  Not just 5-6 mph over actual speed limit, but over 10 mph over the limit.  While we are driving around we will be keeping up with traffic and doing at least 15-20 over the posted speed limit.  We rarely see cops on the highways or in town, so maybe speeding in AL isn't really enforced?!?!

Have you ever moved to a new place?  If so, what are things you have done to find friends?  What things do you like about moving?  I love moving just to have a new house to organize and decorate!  Pictures will follow soon of our new digs!  Have a wonderful holiday weekend.

Til Next Time,
