CSA & Menu Plan Monday {7/25/11}

It is that time again to link up with I'm an Organizing Junkie for Menu Plan Monday

I sat down on Saturday morning with a wonderful cup of coffee (because I cant do anything without coffee) and made my menu and shopping list for the week.  The menu I planned will probably be altered in order for me to get on a different menu planning schedule.  We have joined a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), Grow Alabama.  Every Tuesday we get a delivery of fresh, local produce. Most of the time it is produce that is not sprayed and/or organic. 

This is our first time being a part of CSA and I'm excited to see how it goes.  This will definitely provide us with fruit & veggies that we might not buy normally and allow me to cook with them!  I think the best part about being a member of a CSA is that we support local farmers and in return receive local grown produce that is not shipped MANY miles (sometimes across the ocean!), picked before it is ripe, and sprayed with chemicals.

 This is the size box we get every week. I return it the following week and pick up another one! 


Last week we received blueberries, a melon, green beans, squash, cucumbers, corn on the cob

Local Harvest.  Great place to find things local! 

On a side note, there has been a lot of political activity recently to try and shut down local farms.  In a nut shell, it is a battle between local and commercial farms/government.  This is America and we should have a choice where we buy our food.  There is something wrong when the government is trying to shut down local farms!

I encourage you to support local farmers in your area by purchasing milk, meat, eggs, and produce anytime that you can. I know it takes a little extra effort to find local resources, but it is worth it!  I'm still learning the in's and out's of this and definitely do not consider myself an expert, but I would love to hear from you with any questions you may have. If I don't know the answer I would be more then willing to research it for you.  Also, if you currently purchase local products and have tips, suggestions, or recommendations please share!

Now to my menu plan for the week.  I mentioned earlier that my menu might change because I am trying to switch when I do my menu planning. I would like to do plan my menu and go grocery shopping mid week because of our Tuesday produce delivery and I hate taking part of my weekend for grocery shopping!  Since we are getting a delivery tomorrow of squash, tomatoes, blueberries, okra, and beans my menu wont change a huge amount.

Saturday 7/23
Lunch: On our own since we both had separate plans
Dinner: Grilled Hamburgers, fresh corn on the cob, tossed salad with fresh veggies.

Sunday 7/24
Lunch: Grilled Cheese with Cheddar Cheese (finally gave up the horrible American Cheese---they shouldn't even call that cheese) and Tomato Soup
Dinner: PW Enchiladas.  Tossed Salad.

Monday 7/25
Lunch: Out--errands and lunch in 1 hour makes for a very quick lunch!
Dinner: leftover enchiladas

Tuesday 7/26
Lunch: Leftover BBQ meatballs from a few weeks ago. Do not worry they have been in the freezer!  Tossed Salad.
Dinner: Grilled Chicken & Veggie Kabobs


Wednesday 7/27
Lunch: Leftover grilled chicken on salad.
Dinner: Veggie Soup using stuff we currently have in house and the beans we are getting Tuesday

Thursday 7/28
Lunch: Leftover soup. Tossed Salad
Dinner: Homemade Pizza (didn't make this last week so this is a roll-over recipe)

Friday 7/29
Lunch: Leftovers--whatever we still have left. Probably an assortment.
Dinner: Hamburgers. Tossed Salad.

Saturday 7/30
Lunch: Probably leftovers or sandwiches. Saturday lunch is usually always on our own.
Dinner: Chicken Nuggets and Potato Wedges. This is also rolled over from last week since I didn't get them made.


Sunday 7/31
Lunch: Leftovers
Dinner: Grilled Chicken. Tossed Salad

  2. Are you Grow Alabama is actually working with local farmers? You may want to do a little research. I've heard numerous complaints about the produce actually coming from outside the state and cannot even guarantee organic methods. I once was a member and my experience was a nightmare.

  3. Thanks for the info on Grow Alabama. I would love to ask you some questions, but not sure how to get in touch since you signed in as anonymous. I am actually looking into a different CSA out of Enterprise that is all organic because I have been having a few issues with Grow Alabama.
