Chemical Free Foaming Hand Soap

This week has been a crazy week. I have been listening to the online Real Food Summit presented by Underground Wellness.  Have you been listening and enjoying the Summit?

If you have not signed up for this FREE summit I highly recommend checking it out today! There are three seminars each day from some of the top people in the real food movement. The seminars are only available (for free) during that day, so if you want to check some of them out don't wait around.  The Summit goes through July 16 so you still have a few days to learn about real food.  Tomorrow one of my favorite real food bloggers will be speaking, Kelly The Kitchen Kop. So excited to hear her speak.

Besides getting to listen to these wonderful speakers, there are live Q&A sessions every evening which allows you to ask your questions to the presenters.   I highly recommend you register, I am learning a TON!

Today I want to share with you how I make our chemical free hand soap.  Up until several years ago I used Bath & Body Works hand soaps but as I slowly removed chemicals from our house the hand soap had to go!  I do admit, I love the smells of the Bath & Body Works hand soaps but I just did not want to be washing my hands in chemicals.

Here are a couple articles regarding chemicals in hands soaps (and other products)

Dangers of Antibacterial Soap
Scientists Discover That Antimicrobial Wipes and Soaps May Be Making You (and Society) Sick

Environmental Working Group has a Skin Deep Cosmetics Database which rates products on a number scale based on the ingredients that are in products.  Not all products are listed on the website, but you are able to look up individual ingredients to see how they rank.  I aim to only purchase products with a rating of 3 or below.  I encourage you to check out some of the products you have in your house to see how they rank.  Have you used the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database before?

Are you ready to toss out the hand soaps filled with chemicals in your house?  If so, here is an easy recipe to make your own foaming soap.

What you need:
~Container with foaming lid.  Don't you love the mason jar foaming soap container?  I purchased them from Post Road Vintage.  I also got the basic recipe from Post Road Vintage (excluding the optional ingredients listed below)

~Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap (any scent you want, I usually use Eucalyptus or Unscented)
~Young Living Thieves Essential Oil Blend Household Cleaner (or a mix of your own essential oils)

~Filtered Water

Optional Ingredients that you can add:
~Vegetable Glycerin
~Vitamin E Oil

Once you have the ingredients gathered, here is what you do.

1.) Fill soap container with 1 cup water.  Don't worry, my water is not yellow, I just forgot to add water first. You want to add the water first because if you wait to add it at the end it will get super bubbly.
2.)  Add 2 Tablespoons castile soap to the soap container.

3.)  Add a cap full of Young Living Thieves Essential Oil Blend Household Cleaner.   If you do not have any of the Thieves Essential Oil Blend you could use a mixture of essential oils you like.  When using essential oils, start with a few drops and slowly add more.  Some essentials oils can be very strong and you wont need to use many drops.

4.)  Add 1-2 teaspoons vegetable glycerin (optional).  I just started adding this to my soap and love it.  Vegetable glycerin is a great moisturizer for the skin.

5.) Add 1/2 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil (optional). Vitamin E oil is another great product for skin care products because it moisturizes and is healing due to the antioxidant properties.

6.) Stir the contents and screw on lid.
In under 5 minutes you can have foaming hand soap for your kitchen and bathrooms that you know is safe for you and your family to use!

Do you make your own hand soap? If so feel free to share your recipe in the comments!

  1. Hey Lady!

Do you notice this recipe separating? I use the On Guard hand soap from doTERRA, but I wouldn't mind making my own :)

  3. Hey, that container is so cool. Making my own soap would be really fun and seems easy too. Where would I find the ingredients? Did you get them online?

On another note, I just recently found out about the Environmental Working Group website through another blog I follow. Really great resource. Nice for checking on the products I use, especially the ones I use for the kids.

  5. This is great. I bought a gallon of castile soap a while back for liquid soap, then discovered the hard way as is, it clogs up soap pumps. I use bar soap in the bathroom, but that is just not practical in the kitchen.

Thanks for linking up to Healthy 2Day Wednesday! Hope to see you again tomorrow.

  8. I used this recipe today and I'm stupefied by how easy it was. Getting to the store to buy the castile soap and vitamin E was the hardest part! Thanks!

  9. Chemicals can either be valuable or perilous. This is the reason wellbeing safety measures are utilized in every concoction lab and these stringent measures are just fitting to maintain a strategic distance from perilous mix-ups. https://topas.com
